You are currently viewing Summertime Mow

There’s nothing like a summertime mow: warm air and the smell of freshly cut green grass. That is of course if you’re not scalping your lawn by cutting it too short while breathing in all that dust. For this reason (and others), you should never cut your lawn short in the summer, keep it tall.

Lawn cut at 3.25 inches

This week I was out of town so before I left I squeezed in a mow at 3.25 inches. We had a lot of rain during the following couple of days combined with high temperatures and humidity. This is why I applied a fungicide to help with these conditions. As much as I hate doing it, it’s been helping to keep my lawn free of rust fungus.

When I got back, my lawn was long, which worked out great because I was planning to increase my height of cut from 3.25 to 3.5 inches. This also helped me to stay within the 1/3 rule of not cutting more than 1/3 of the grass blade. Had the grass been even taller, I would have done a double cut, cutting small portion of the blade each time instead of doing one big cut which could stress the grass plant.

While on vacation we went to what is in my opinion the best beach in New England: Mayflower Beach in Dennis, MA. There is no better beach especially if you have kids. The best time to go is at high tide or just make a day out of it and get there no later than 9:30 am. As the tide goes down, there will be many natural pools created by the vast amount of sandbars everywhere. What is a 25 ft stretch of beach turns into 100 to 200 ft or more.
