We can feel it! The sun lingers a touch longer each day. Beneath the surface, something great is about to begin. A silent revolution unfolds. Seeds, slumbering through the winter’s chill, tiny green shoots push their way through the soil. This my friends, is the magic of early spring, and the beginning of lawn care season!
Check Your Lawn Equipment And Inventory
It’s time to get your lawn equipment ready to start the season. Whether it be oil changes, new air filters, spark plugs, charged batteries, get it done! This is also a good time to look over your inventory and make sure you’re ready to put that pre-emergent down when the time comes.
3 Ways To Know When To Put Down Pre-Emergent
- Look for those yellow bushes on the side of the road or in your neighbor’s yard – the forsythia bush. When they are blooming (as seen above), it’s time to put down pre-emergent to prevent crabgrass and other weeds.
- Another option is to go on Green Cast’s Website and entering your zip code. This will show you the soil temperature in your area. When the average 5 day soil temperature around 50°F, it’s time!
- A third option is to go on the GDD Tracker Website from Michigan State University, enter your zip code and click on Crabgrass PRE. This will show you in real time when conditions are optimal to throw down pre-emergent to prevent weeds.
You can’t go wrong with any of the options above. Even if you are a little late, be sure to get that pre-emergent down. Something is better than nothing and makes a big difference in the amount of weeds you will have to deal with when summer hits.
So there you have it, this is what I will be doing in the next couple of weeks, getting my equipment and inventory ready so I’m prepared to throw down pre-emergent when conditions are just right. I’ll be sure to add a post to my lawn journal when that happens. Read this article for more tips on how to prevent weeds.
