So, I finally finished my last lawn fertilizer for the 2025 lawn season yesterday. It’s bittersweet to check that off my list, it means this lawn season is coming to an end.
I used Scott’s Winterguard Fall Lawn Food. Honestly, I didn’t pick it for any secret “winterizing” powers—that’s mostly just how they market it. What really matters is the ratio, and this one is a 32-0-10. That basically means it’s packed with the good stuff your lawn needs for a deep green color and strong roots: Nitrogen. When you spread it out at the suggested rate (2.5 lbs per 1,000 sqft), you’re giving the grass a nice, healthy boost of Nitrogen (0.80 lbs) to help it grow and stay vibrant.
Why bother with this now? Well, right now is the sweet spot for the last lawn fertilizer of the season. The soil isn’t frozen yet, and your grass still has time to soak up all those nutrients before the serious cold hits. If you wait too long, even if the ground isn’t rock-hard, most of the fertilizer will just sit there and get wasted.
Seriously, if you haven’t done your fall feeding yet, you’re still in the window to winterize your lawn! Don’t put it off—it’s the single best thing you can do to make sure your lawn bounces back green and strong next spring. Get it done before it’s too late!
