Dealing with moss in the the lawn can be challenging. Here are a few tips on how to get rid of moss and prevent it from coming back by promoting a healthy lawn.
Rake It Up
The quickest way to get rid of moss is to simply rake it up. This is effective especially if you only have a few spots with moss. Raking will help expose the underlying soil and make it easier to treat.
Apply Moss Killer
Apply a moss killer product such as Scott’s MossEx. This product should be applied when the grass is wet. It kills moss and helps thicken the lawn. I did this myself here.
Get a Soil Test
Moss thrives in acidic soil so it’s a good idea to get a soil test to get your soil’s pH level. The ideal pH level for a healthy lawn should be between 6.0 and 7.0. Anything below that range is considered acidic. If your soil is acidic, you can apply lime to raise the pH level.
Improve Drainage
Moss loves moist and poorly drained areas so improving drainage in those areas can help prevent it from returning. Consider aerating the soil to allow for better water penetration or perhaps try to water less in those areas.
Reseed or Re-Sod
Once the moss has been removed it’s important to fill in any bare spots with grass seed or fresh sod. This will help prevent the moss from returning by providing healthy competition for space.
Remember, getting rid of moss for good may take some time and effort but with consistent care you can restore your lawn to its green glory.
