The first mow of 2024 is in the books. I mowed at a height of 2.5″ which is shorter than I normally do. This helped open up the grass canopy to take advantage of the additional sunlight and warmer temperatures. It also helped with cleanup of any debris such as twigs or leaves that collected over the winter.
I had a couple of damaged areas, likely from snow mold. They should recover in 2-3 weeks.
For now my pre-emergent holding pattern continues. Although soil temperatures are getting closer to the optimal range (50-55°F), heavy rain is foretasted for the next few days and temperatures will be dropping again.
As of today, it looks like the best time for me to put down pre-emergent will be the end of next week.
