You are currently viewing Added Pre-Emergent To My Lawn

This week I added pre-emergent to my lawn. The soil temperature in my yard is approaching 50°F and the forecast for the next week shows temperatures beginning to warm up. If you’re in the Northeast, now and for the next couple of weeks is a good time to put down pre-emergent to prevent crabgrass and other weeds.

Don’t Forget To Enjoy The Mow

Before I applied the pre-emergent, I enjoyed the mow at a height of 2.5″ and bagged the clippings to help the pre-emergent get down to the soil more easily. It will need to be watered in which is also why I put it down now because rain is expected in the next couple of days.

Tried A Different Pre-Emergent

This year and for the first time I used Scott’s Turf Builder with Halts Crabgrass Preventer. For my own curiosity I wanted to try something with fertilizer in the mix to see how my lawn responds. I’m expecting that it will grow like crazy and I’ll have no choice but to mow twice a week (who’s complaining). In prior seasons I’ve always used pre-emergent without the fertilizer and had good results, but my lawn wasn’t “popping” with enough green for my liking early in the season. The bag I used covers 5,000 sqft and weighed 13.58 lbs. I applied it at a bag rate of 2.7 lbs. per 1,000 sqft (13.58 / 5) using a Scott’s rotary spreader.

I also had some time to clean up my landscaping beds, just need to get more landscaping rocks to spruce them up. It was a beautiful day that even Zoey was outside inspecting my work.
